Career Path
One of the many factors which makes Jane Street stand out from other
trading firms is its commitment to professional development. Jane Street employees
typically begin working for the firm as Assistant Traders, assisting more
experienced traders during market hours by checking and hedging positions,
researching new trading opportunities, constructing models to evaluate and price
derivative securities, and executing trades.
After market hours, Assistant Traders attend classes several days a week in
game theory, programming, mathematics, decision theory, and option pricing theory, learning
directly from senior traders and senior management with many years of industry
experience. Employees also participate in simulated trading exercises, where
more experienced members of the firm can evaluate and comment on their
performance. The Jane Street education program trains new employees in both the
mechanics of trading as well as the mind set and critical thinking required to
trade effectively.
Jane Street is a meritocracy, where career advancement comes quickly with
professional excellence. When Assistant Traders attain a high level of
proficiency in both trading theory and practice, they are promoted. Even after
becoming full traders, employees continue to attend theory classes and mentor
with more experienced members of the firm. Traders are also encouraged to attend
relevant classes in finance and mathematics through the firm's tuition
reimbursement program.
Quantitative Research
The Quantitative Research department brings cutting-edge technologies
and powerful computer systems to the task of analyzing, optimizing and
discovering new trading strategies. We're looking for people with a
practical mindset and strong mathematical and programming skills.
Job Qualifications
We want people with:
- A strong mathematical background, including a good understanding
of probability and statistics, calculus, algorithms, etc. We draw
on ideas from everywhere we can, so broad interest and experience
in a variety of scientific fields is important.
- A well-rounded programming background. We use a variety of
programming languages, from C++ to python to ocaml --- so we need
people who are comfortable learning new programming paradigms.
Many of our systems are built in ocaml, so experience with ML or
other functional languages is very useful. Applicants should have
a strong UNIX background, and should be good at reasoning about
the way computer systems work.
- A commitment to the practical. The quantitative research
department is tightly integrated with our trading operation, and
we work very hard to keep our analysis relevant. One of the big
attractions of our work is the opportunity to apply serious ideas
to real-world problems.
- Great communication skills. We need people who can explain things
clearly and cogently, who can read dense academic papers and write
clear documentation.
Career Path
Quantitative Researchers, or Quants, are tightly integrated into the
trading operation, and have a similar career path. Employees
typically begin as Assistant Quants, dealing with systems
administration and basic programming tasks as they get the hang of our
systems and learn more about trading. Quants attend classes and
seminars in order to further their professional development.
Assistants who attain a high level of independence and display a
strong understanding of trading and our analysis techniques will be
promoted. Further education is encouraged, both through the classes
we offer and through classes offered at nearby institutions.
