Each summer, Jane Street seeks to augment our intellectual environment by inviting a diverse roster of guest speakers. Past invitees have included the following.

Academic Finance
  • Steve Allen Deputy Director of the Mathematics in Finance Master's Program at NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, with a 35-year career in the finance industry; author of major books on risk management and security valuation.

  • Adlai Fisher Assistant Professor of Finance at the University of British Columbia; research and teaching interests include corporate decisions and asset prices, volatility modeling, derivatives and mergers and acquisitions.

  • Didier Sornette Professor of Geology at UCLA; pioneer in modeling bubbles and crashes.

  • Peter Carr Head of Quantitative Financial Research for Bloomberg and Director of the Masters in Math Finance Program at NYU's Courant Institute; headed equity derivative research groups at two major banks and was a finance professor at Cornell University for eight years.

Finance Commentary and Analysis
  • James Grant Founder of Grant's Interest Rate Observer in 1983 after eight years at Barron's, where he started the "Current Yield" column; author of four books on finance and financial history and columnist for Forbes.

  • Rich Bernstein Chief Quantitative Strategist for Merrill Lynch; perennial member of the Institutional Investor All-America Research team.

  • William Poole Chief executive of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, stepping down in March of 2008.

  • Bruce Kasman JP Morgan Chase's Chief Economist; has worked at the Fed, Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan Chase for over 20 years.

  • Dean Maki Managing director and chief U.S. economist at Barclays Capital, based in New York City.

  • John Ryding Bear Stearns's Chief US Economist; formerly Senior Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and an Econometric Advisor to The Bank of England.

  • Eric Rosenfeld Trader and principal at hedge fund Long-Term Capital Management; later joined John Meriwether at JWM Partners and in 2007 founded Quantitative Alternatives LLC.

  • Mark Zurack Spent 18 years at Goldman Sachs, beginning his career there in 1983 and forming the Equity Derivatives Research Group; now a professor at both Columbia Business School and Cornell University.

  • Joe Gawronski President and COO of Rosenblatt Securities, Inc.; expert on US market structure.

  • Richard Rosenblatt Executive Governor of the NYSE with 37 years in the financial markets; founder and CEO of Rosenblatt Securities Inc.

  • Rick Bookstaber Author of four books, including Demon Of Our Own Design. Pioneering risk manager at many firms, including ten years at Morgan Stanley.

  • Eliezer Yudkowsky Co-founder of the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and an editor of the blog "Less Wrong."

  • Tyler Cowen Professor of Economics at George Mason University, co-blogger for the popular "Marginal Revolution," and author of myriad books including Create Your Own Economy.

  • Joseph Stiglitz University Professor at Columbia University and Chair of the Committee on Global Thought; won the 2001 Nobel Prize in Economics for his analyses of markets with asymmetric information.

  • Robin Hanson Economics professor at GMU with diverse interests; pioneer of prediction markets and an editor of the blog "Overcoming Bias."

  • Dan Gardner Canadian columnist, author of Risk: The Science and Politics of Fear.

  • Steven Pinker Psychology professor at MIT and one of the world’s leading experts on language and the mind; was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for How The Mind Works.

  • Christopher Hitchens Social critic, columnist and best selling author of numerous books, including his latest, God is Not Great.

  • Amity Shlaes Formerly a columnist for the Financial Times, now a syndicated columnist for Bloomberg and a contributor to Marketplace, the public radio show.
